Under general supervision, the Interpreter II facilitates the integration or Deaf professionals in a wide spectrum or settings by interpreting the spoken or signed communication (English -American Sign Language). The incumbent works in settings like advanced or highly complex instructional classes, meetings, discussions, seminars, conferences, workshops, theatrical performances, platform settings, and other university or academic-related events/activities; provides services which involve highly complex or specialized subject matter and vocabulary that requires a high degree of linguistic, cognitive, and technical skill in order to accurately adapt the terminology, language, concept, theory, and emotion to fully convey all aspects or the experience; assists the Lead and the Department Chair by providing direction to hourly intermittent interpreters and with coordination of interpreting tasks and services for the department including monitoring work quality and assigning and scheduling interpreters, arranging for substitutes as needed; assists with ongoing professional development; and performs other duties as assigned.
Generally, wide acquaintance with academic higher education through attendance at or graduation from a four-year college or university may be essential to provide interpreting services at a level required for the position assignments. In addition, two years of relevant documented interpreting experience in a variety of settings usually are needed to perform at the level required for position assignments. Equivalent or 1,200 hours or paid interpreting experience and equivalent to some coordination experience performing light office duties including but not limited to coordination, scheduling, assessment, etc., preferred
Incumbents must possess and maintain skills certification in either interpreting or transliteration as issued by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or possess and maintain NIC (National Interpreter Certification) certification issued by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or comparable certification.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the interpreting process; demonstrated understanding of the special communication needs of Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing consumers; comprehensive understanding of Deaf Culture, working knowledge of platform interpreting techniques; working knowledge of the vocabulary, terminology, and basic information in a variety of subjects; and specific knowledge of specialized vocabulary and techniques used in interpreting professional and technical subject matter. Ability to hear spoken English and use ASL, Signed English, and/or another manual sign system to effectively generate language. Must be able to interpret effectively at a level that requires using unique terminology and language; effectively shift between ASL or a manual sign system to spoken English and vice versa in highly interactive situations, such as discussions, workshops, seminars and platform settings; interpret difficult and complex terms, concepts, ideas and emotions; learn unique subject matter, theories, and terminology; provide accurate, thorough, and comprehensive services; and be responsive to students’ communication needs and preferences.

The salary range for this classification is: $3554 – $7721 (PTE) per month.
The anticipated HIRING RANGE: $3554 – $6849 (PTE), dependent upon qualifications and experience.
Part-Time; 30 hours per week; Monday through Friday. May include some evenings and weekends.
This is a Regular position with a one-year probationary period.
