The Department of Classical & Modern Languages- American Sign Language Interpreting Studies program at the University of Louisville invites applicants for a full-time Term Instructor to serve as the Coordinator of ASL Curriculum and Instruction. As part of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department offers a Bachelor of Science in American Sign Language Interpreting Studies as well as a minor in Deaf Studies. The ASL faculty teach all levels of ASL to a diverse student body using an immersive approach. Full-time faculty are expected to teach, assess, communicate effectively through ASL and written English, support part-time faculty members, participate in department, division, and college-wide committees, and engage in ongoing professional development, including equity training. This Term Instructor will also be responsible for coordinating the program’s ASL instruction. This position is subject of final budget approval.
We seek applicants prepared to teach face-to-face, hybrid, and online undergraduate courses who are committed to teaching excellence, program and curriculum development, leadership, and collaboration with faculty, staff and community partners. This position works productively with the Director of ASL Interpreting Studies, ASLIS faculty, and community partners. Active engagement with the Deaf community is expected. Additionally, the successful candidate will demonstrate a clear commitment to understanding issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion, as well as best practices for ensuring that all students in a diverse community, including members of traditionally underrepresented groups, are supported.
Job Duties and Overview
Candidate must be able to teach courses such as:
- ASL levels 100-400+
- Fingerspelling & Numbers
- Deaf Culture
- Deaf Heritage
Candidate must be able to:
- Coordinate beginning, intermediate, and advanced ASL courses
- Supervise part-time and full-time ASL instructors as well as ASL lab workers
- Oversee development of course assessment materials
- Recruit instructors as needed
- Promote the ASLIS program on and off campus
- Administer and evaluate placement tests for ASL students and ASLIS candidates
- Work collaboratively with the Director of ASL Interpreting Studies to ensure course progression and preparation of ASLIS majors.
- Other duties as assigned
- MA or higher in ASL Education, ASL Linguistics, or other closely related field
- Native or near-native proficiency in ASL
- Evidence of teaching excellence
- Understanding of instructional best practices and pedagogy
- Commitment to fostering a diverse and equitable learning environment
- Proficiency teaching in multiple modalities- face to face, hybrid, and online (synchronous and asynchronous)
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to demonstrate on-going reflective practice
- ASLTA certification
- 2+ years of teaching ASL experience at the college level.
- Experience teaching advanced ASL courses in an interpreting studies program.
- Proficiency with various instructional technologies, preferably Blackboard, Zoom, and GoReact
- Evidence of involvement in broader institutional activities (e.g., committees, work groups)
- Scholarly research and activities that expand the knowledge base of ASL education
- Involvement in local, state, and national organizations that promote best practices in ASL Education
