Western Michigan University invites applications and nominations for the position of American Sign Language (ASL) Faculty Specialist I or II in the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences. The ideal candidate is a person who displays strong leadership skills in academic education, program coordination, and community engagement. This is a term, full-time, fiscal-year (12-months) position, with an expected start date of May 1, 2020.
- Curriculum development
- ASL instruction at multiple levels
- ASL program coordination
- Development of the ASL program and enhancement of its visibility
- Cultivate connections with the Deaf community
- Engagement in faculty governance procedures through service at the Department, College, and University levels
- Bachelor’s degree
- 3 years of ASL teaching experience at the post-secondary level with evidence of teaching excellence
- Evidence of ASL proficiency
- Evidence of knowledge, connection, and appreciation of Deaf culture
- Experience working with diverse student populations
- Graduate degree in a related field
- An established record of teaching excellence across multiple levels of ASL including Deaf culture at the post-secondary level
- Experience developing and implementing outreach programs with the Deaf community
- Experience in program coordination and curriculum development

In addition to the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, the college includes programs in blindness and low vision studies, nursing, occupational therapy, physician assistant, social work, holistic health care, alcohol and drug abuse, interdisciplinary health services, public health, physical therapy, and a Ph.D. in interdisciplinary health sciences. The college has received several grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), and the Department of Education. The Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences enrolls approximately 60 students in the two-year M.A. program in speech-language pathology, 24 students in the doctoral (AuD) program in audiology, 130 undergraduate majors, and 109 undergraduate minors in American Sign Language (ASL). There are currently over two hundred students enrolled in ASL courses which help meet the University’s new essential studies requirement in World Language and Culture. The Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences faculty are engaged in active research with students, classroom and clinical teaching through the on-campus Van Riper Language, Speech, and Hearing Clinics, and service to the university and professions. Opportunities exist for interprofessional collaborations within the College, across the University, and across the greater Kalamazoo community.
